In 1948 (73years ago), Nii Kwabena Bonne II organized a boycott of all European goods in response to their high prices which was having a toll on the living conditions of people in the Gold Coast. Nii Bonne was then the Osu Alata Mantse (Chief of Osu Alata), a suburb of Accra.

The boycott started on January 26, 1948 and ended on February 28, 1948. Ex-servicemen on the last day of the boycott marched to the British governor at the Osu Castle but were stopped by the police. Three (3) ex-servicemen were killed by the colonial police during the march. This led to a riot, leading to the the arrest of the Big Six, as they were blamed for the riots.
